أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَعْمَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ عَنْ زَکَرِيَّا بْنِ إِسْحَقَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي الشَّعْثَائِ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَائَ إِلَی النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ أَبِي شَيْخٌ کَبِيرٌ أَفَأَحُجُّ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ کَانَ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ فَقَضَيْتَهُ أَکَانَ يُجْزِئُ عَنْهُ

محمد بن معمر، ابوعاصم، زکریا بن اسحاق ، عمرو بن دینار، ابوشعثاء، ابن عباس سے روایت ہے کہ ایک آدمی خدمت نبوی صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم میں حاضر ہوا اور اس نے عرض کیا میرے والد بالکل بوڑھے اور کمزور ہو گئے ہیں کیا میں ان کی جانب سے حج کر لوں آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا جی ہاں تم دیکھو اگر تمہارے والد کے ذمہ قرض ہوتا تو وہ کافی ہوتا تو وہ کافی نہ ہوتا۔

It was narrated from Shuraib that he wrote to ‘Umar, to ask him (a question), and ‘Umar wrote back to him telling him: “Judge according to what is in the Book of Allah. If it is not (mentioned) in the Book of Allah, then (judge) according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم . If it is not (mentioned) in the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم then pass judgment according to the way the righteous passed judgment. If it is not (mentioned) in the Book of Allah, or the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم and the righteous did not pass judgment concerning it, then if you wish, go ahead (and try to work it out by yourself) or if you wish, leave it. And I think that leaving it is better for you. And peace be upon you.”(Sahih).
